NV Energy Imposter Calls and Meter Upgrade Scams

Callers spoof NV Energy's number, threaten to cut off power within the hour, or say you must pay for a new meter or meter upgrade. NV Energy says it does not call to demand immediate payment for any reason. Small businesses are frequent targets because a shutoff threat during business hours feels real.
How it works
- A call, text, or email says your account is past due or a meter must be replaced.
- You are told to pay in minutes by Zelle, Venmo, Bitcoin, prepaid card, or a QR or bar code.
- The number on caller ID looks like NV Energy's.
Red flags
- NV Energy gives a 10-day notice on your bill and 48-hour notice by U.S. Mail before disconnection for nonpayment.
- NV Energy does not accept Zelle, Venmo, MoneyPak, or Bitcoin, and does not ask for payment by QR or bar code.
- A demand for immediate payment on a call you did not expect.
What to do
- Hang up. Call NV Energy customer service at 775-834-4444 (Northern Nevada, 24/7).
- Report scam attempts to NV Energy at (775) 834-SCAM (7226).
- If you paid, contact your bank or card provider immediately and file a police report.
